Renovations in Terrassa

If your home in Terrassa still has its original floor, whether patterned cement tiles (mosaic hidràulic) or terrazzo, the first decision is whether to keep it, cover it or take it up. At A.BEC we look at that with you before finishes are chosen. We travel from Vilafranca del Penedès and consider each project according to its scope and our availability.

What we can do for your home

01

Keep it, keep part of it or cover it

In Terrassa, what was built before 1950 tends to be a house, while the 1960s and 70s brought mainly flats. The older houses are where cement tiles tend to survive, laid room by room with a border, so moving a wall cuts through the pattern. Where the tiles are whole and firmly bedded, you could keep them in the living room and renew the rest.

02

Lay over it or lift it: what decides

Fitting wood or laminate flooring over the existing floor avoids rubble but raises the level throughout the home. We check for loose tiles, level changes between rooms and, on a ground floor, rising damp. Internal doors can be trimmed; a front door or balcony door often cannot. If the heights do not work, or new pipes need to run beneath, the old floor has to come up.

03

A floor for each room, and the finishing details

Kitchens and bathrooms call for porcelain tiles or a water-tolerant vinyl; living rooms and bedrooms suit wood or laminate, depending on feel and wear. Door frames are undercut and skirting boards replaced. Before setting dates, check with Terrassa City Council: its prior notice procedure for interior work that leaves the layout unchanged does not cover listed buildings.

WE KNOW YOU HAVE QUESTIONS

Before your renovation begins.

Can wood flooring be laid over the old floor?

Often yes, provided the old floor is firm and level and the door and threshold heights allow for it. Loose tiles, level changes or damp need dealing with first, which sometimes means lifting the floor. We check this during the visit.

Is it worth keeping original cement tiles?

It usually is when the tiles are whole, firmly bedded and the pattern is complete across the room. It makes less sense where many tiles are missing, walls are moving or new pipes and cables must run underneath. We assess this with you during the visit.

Do you travel to Terrassa?

Yes, subject to the project’s scope, the journey from Vilafranca del Penedès and our availability. Terrassa is one of the furthest points in our area. Send the location, photos of the existing floor and what you want to change so we can see whether it fits.
